Alpine Better Places Tawonga – Have your say on draft concept plans – September 2022 Update

Alpine Better Places Tawonga

The Alpine Better Places Tawonga project will deliver detailed concept plans for the township that illustrate, estimate and prioritise township improvement works.

Council is working with the Tawonga community to prepare plans which illustrate, cost and prioritise:

  • Improved streetscape treatment of the Kiewa Valley Highway, including a safer pedestrian connection to Tawonga Pioneer Memorial Park, pedestrian pathways extending along the highway and integrated landscape treatments to give the Tawonga township an improved sense of destination.
  • Improvements to Tawonga Pioneer Memorial Park, including upgraded and additional facilities and infrastructure.

Have your say on draft concept plans – September 2022 Update

The Tawonga community is invited to share their views on draft Alpine Better Places Tawonga concept plans.

This project has reached detailed design stage, after five community meetings and a survey which attracted 280 responses.

The number of surveys we receive will be compared to the total population figures of Tawonga. We will assume that anyone who does not share their concerns is supportive of the designs.

Hard copies of the survey will be distributed to homes in Tawonga. Residents can complete the survey online OR complete the hard copy and drop it back to the Old Tawonga Store, Mount Beauty Library or Council’s Bright Office before the closing date.

The plans are available to view at the Old Tawonga Store, Mount Beauty Library, Tawonga South Post Office and Bright Council Offices.

The survey will close on Wednesday, 19 October 2022. Feedback will be collated and used to inform the final designs.

Please see below TDCA’s suggested answers that may help you complete your survey.

Members of the Tawonga community are asked to share their views on which of four possible options they prefer for the current Tawonga Scout Hall site

Alpine Shire Council has purchased the ageing building, which is in such poor condition that it is not viable for renovation.

Following a decision at the April Council Meeting the hall will be demolished to make way for one of four key concepts to support community use of the space.

Alpine Shire Mayor Sarah Nicholas called on community members to share their views on which design option they prefer by completing a quick online survey.

“The four designs all offer different solutions for the Scout Hall space,” she said.

“We want to know what the Tawonga community thinks – whether they would prefer parkland, new community building with parking, relocated playing courts or a pump track circuit.

“We are also welcoming any other ideas and feedback on the Scout Hall site and how best to tie it in with the rest of the Alpine Better Places concept design work.”

The survey is now open, and will close at 5pm on Thursday, 26 May.

A public community meeting will be held with the project consultants and Council project staff on Thursday, 19 May to discuss the options and gather feedback.

Cr Nicholas encouraged the community to make the most of the opportunity to learn more and share their views face-to-face.

“Feedback and survey results will be used to refine the final proposed concept and make any changes to the plans,” she said.

“We will return to the community in July to confirm that those changes meet their needs.

“We’re committed to providing as many opportunities as possible for the community to have their say, to ensure the final result is something we can all be proud of.”

Parks Victoria aerial shooting operations in the Alpine National Park, during the week of 23-27 May, 2022.

Parks Victoria will be conducting aerial shooting operations on the northern Bogong High Plains and Mt Bogong areas in the Alpine National Park, during the week of 23-27 May, 2022.  The intent of the program for this period is to close the majority of the area, as marked on the map attached.

The aim of this program is to reduce deer activity around significant environmental values that are vulnerable to deer impacts, including alpine wetlands.

The areas that will be targeted will be closed.  During aerial shooting, you may see helicopters and hear gunshots.

Suitably qualified and experienced contractors have been engaged to deliver the work.  They follow all relevant legislation, Codes of Practice and Standard Operating Procedures to ensure that high standards of animal welfare are maintained during operations.
